Guides

    Frequently asked questions

    How is a fence priced?

By the fence line. Linear footage, height, material and grade, post count and footing spec, rail count, gate count, terrain and access are the items a written estimate is built from. Price per foot alone is not comparable between quotes.

How deep do fence posts need to go?

The common rule is a third of the above-ground height, and always below the local frost line. A 6 ft fence therefore usually means an 8 ft post with about 2 ft in the ground, deeper for gate posts and in heaving clay.

Do I need a permit for a fence?

It depends on the jurisdiction, the height and where on the property the fence goes. Front-boundary height and corner sight-line rules are the two most commonly restricted items, and an HOA can add approval on top. The permit is issued to the property owner.

Who is responsible for the property line?

The owner. A recorded plat or a survey is the only authority on where the boundary runs. Many owners deliberately set the fence a few inches inside their own line so maintenance never requires stepping onto a neighbour's property.

Can a fence follow sloped ground?

Yes, two ways. Stepping keeps each panel level and steps the line down, leaving triangular gaps at the bottom. Racking lets the rails follow the grade with the pickets staying plumb, which closes those gaps and is normally what pet owners want.

Is it worth repairing a fence or replacing it?

Count the failed posts, not the broken boards. Localised damage in an otherwise straight, solid run repairs economically. Once roughly a third of the posts have gone, replacement usually costs less than continued repair and restarts the full service life.
